More than 120,000 tell Congress to oppose Doc Hastings plan to weaken the Endangered Species Act

Four bills being pushed by Congressman Doc Hastings, who is Chair of the House Natural Resources Committee,  could severely weaken the Endangered Species Act if passed into law.

These bills would allow politicians — not scientists — to determine what is the best available science on endangered species listing issues. They would also force wildlife agencies to post the nesting and denning sites of imperiled species online – which could do easily facilitate poaching. They would also severely limit the ability of ordinary citizens to participate in the public process by putting road blocks in between them and the courts. (Bills HR 4315, HR 4316, HR 4317, HR 4318)

The House could vote on these bills as soon as the first week of July.

  1. We the People of the United States of America say this: No MORE WAR IN THE MIDDLE EAST. Fix OUR ROADS< AND STOP STOP STOP KILLING OUR WILD LIFE!!!!!!Do NOT SUPPORT THIS ACT OR ANY CONGRESSMAN WHO APPROVES THIS BILL!

  2. HR 4316 appears to be an effort to cost USDI more, and to report annually its actions under ESA to the House, so that the House has more political oversight within a single term of congress – thus mad hatters of tea parties, etc. will have ammunition and oversight over environmental and ecological issues far beyond their escape from the insane into government.

HR 4317 requires more bureaucracy in reportage to states, while inserting “commercial”data into the law, rather than scientific data. This has the effect of weakening through decisionmaking based upon effects of protection upon commercial entities – a grave corruption of the ideal of valuing the life of endangered species.
In 4315 Hastings again would add the use of commercial information to obfuscate and bias Endangered species listing decisions.

Such corruption would make the process far more lengthy and costly, and could in effect damn many more species to disappearance from the Earth for selfish, short-term human profit.

4318 removes the discretion of the court as to determining whether the loser of a suit should pay court costs. This change can and will prevent individuals and small organizations from being able to pursue litigation in fear of loss (and you KNOW how arbitrary and corrupt our highest court has become in damaging anything and anyone who stands in the way of corporations!), bankruptcy, dissolution.

I am surprised that Endangered Species coalition is ahead of larger preservation-oriented organizations in seeing the danger in these bills. I realize that it operates with an obviously tiny staff and budget (I do not and will not support facebook and thus get little info from ESC)
